Trusting God

In his book Signature Sins, (Intervarsity 2008 ) Michael Mangis, a professor of psychology at Wheaton College, writes:

Oswald Chambers brilliantly pointed out that the root of sin lies in "an incurable suspicion of God": the suspicion that God is not good. My signature sins are my personal doubts about God's goodness. I sin when I do not trust that God has my best interests at heart. I sin when I am alone and afraid and God's promises seem so long ago and difficult to remember. I sin when I am pretty sure God would say no to the thing I want right now but that I am convinced I cannot live without.

Trusting God is not a once and for all decision. Jesus does not knock at our door only once in our lives. He is not content that we once gave ourselves to him. He asks us to follow him every day.

Human beings are created not to stay put but to go on pilgrimage. We follow God to a particular place where we might rest for a while and even see a new miracle like water coming from a rock. Eventually God says, "OK, pack it up. Let's move on."

God is always calling us to grow and change and move on to another level of spiritual maturity. The direction I am to go next is not always clear. Sometimes I have to follow God in a direction which seems entirely wrong. I have to trust that He is good.
